Amid the sweltering heat of summer’s “dog days,” a light drizzle fell as a van filled with supplies made its way along a country road, carrying hope to its destination.

On the morning of July 16, 2024, Shandong Dongfa Refrigeration Technology Co., Ltd., in partnership with Liaocheng Shangshan Social Work Service Center, delivered daily necessities, living allowances, and tuition fees to students from economically disadvantaged families.

“These include shoes, clothes, toiletries, and some nutritional products. Please assure the child that he can focus on his studies without worry—our company will cover the tuition, living, and accommodation expenses,” said Wang Chao, Deputy General Manager of Shandong Dongfa Refrigeration Technology Co., Ltd. He added that the company is committed to providing further support whenever difficulties arise in the future.

Dongfa Refrigeration Technology specializes in the production of industrial valves including globe valves, check valves, stop-check valves, throttle valves, filters, and constant pressure valves. After more than a decade of dedicated operation, the “Dongfa” brand has grown into a leading name in the refrigeration valve industry.

At the home of Li Long (a pseudonym) in Zhangluji Town, Dongchangfu District, the boy accepted the supplies and living allowance with heartfelt gratitude. “I am truly thankful to the uncles and aunts. I will study hard to give back to society one day,” he said.

Li Long, who will enter his senior year of high school this coming semester, lost his father in a traffic accident in 2010. His mother later remarried, and after his grandfather passed away from illness, the family was left with significant debt. Now living with his elderly grandmother, who has limited ability to work and can only farm a small plot of land for basic sustenance, Li Long and his grandmother rely mainly on subsistence allowances to get by.

“He has been with me since he was three years old. Life was already hard when my husband was still alive, but after he passed, it became even more difficult,” said Ms. Zhang, Li Long’s grandmother. “Now I’m over 70 and can’t work anymore. We depend on farming and government aid to support his education.”

The team from Dongfa and Shangshan Social Work Service Center also visited households in Houying Town (Dongchangfu District), Guguantun Town (High-Tech Zone), Guangping Town (Dongchangfu District), and Weivan Town (Linqing City), delivering daily necessities, school supplies, clothing, shoes, and other aid to students in need.

At the home of Zhang Yu (a pseudonym) in Guguantun Town, the student was seen previewing his first-year high school lessons at a desk, with only a small fan to relieve the summer heat.

“We began supporting Zhang Yu when he was in elementary school, and we’ve developed a deep connection with him. He has always excelled academically, and now he’s been admitted to a top high school—his future is bright,” said a staff member from the Shangshan Social Work Service Center.

Zhang Yu scored 705 points on the high school entrance exam and was admitted to the new campus of Liaocheng No. 1 High School. After his mother passed away and his father went missing, he has been living with his grandmother, who suffers from hypertension and gastroenteritis, requiring long-term medication. The family relies on three acres of farmland for basic food needs, and often has only pickles to eat. Their home was built with government support.
